HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
In the southeastern United States, populations of this species are sporadically distributed in Appalachian mountain, Appalachian plateau and Atlantic piedmont regions. It is known only from a few localities in the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains (Martof et al. 1980).

In the mountains, the four-toed salamander is associated sphagnum bogs and grassy fens (Wilson 1995). In the piedmont and coastal plain, ponds, springs, floodplain pools, marshes, and streams adjacent to or surrounded by forest with sections of dense moss and/or grass-sedge ground cover are preferred (Wilson 1995). Occasionally, more densely forested wet situations, such as swamps, are used. Aquatic habitats are typically absent of fish (Petranka 1998). May prefer hardwood forests.

Adults are commonly fossorial in the southern states (Petranka 1998).

NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Adults live under objects or among mosses in swamps, boggy streams, and wet, wooded or open areas near ponds or quiet, mossy or grassy/sedgy pools (the larval habitat). Sphagnum moss is commonly abundant in suitable habitat.

Eggs are laid in moss or other protected sites immediately above or next to a pool, into which the larvae drop or wriggle after hatching.
