HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
This species inhabits mesic woodlands, especially near breeding pools (Martof et al. 1980). The species is very common near almost any type of woodland or brushland aquatic habitat (Redmond and Scott 1996). They are particularly abundant in brushy secondary growth or cutover woodlots near small temporary or semi-permanent ponds or swamps (Wilson 1995, Conant and Collins 1998). Preferred breeding sites are areas with trees and shrubs standing in water or wet sites bordered by thick undergrowth vegetation (Johnson 1977, Collins 1974). Breeding occurs in woodland ponds, marshy ponds, swamps and ditches with proximal shrubs (Martof et al. 1980, Wilson 1995). In a New York study, young found in fields were rarely 50 meters from the breeding pond during June and July (Oplinger 1967 - Herpetol. 23(3):209-217).

Shelter under forest litter or within brushy undergrowth (Martof et al. 1980). Eggs are attached to submerged vegetation or other objects (Martof et al. 1980).

NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Typically in moist wooded areas, especially near breeding pools. Mostly terrestrial. Hides under logs, rocks, or other objects when inactive.

Eggs are laid and larvae develop in small temporary or permanent waters of ponds (including those in fields with nearby forest), marshes, ditches, and swamps, especially those with standing plants, sticks, or other debris. Males call usually from among herbaceous vegetation adjacent to or standing in water. In northern Minnesota, successful reproduction in acidic bog water either does not occur or is a rare event (Karns 1992).
