HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
Fairly common to common across the state from the lower elevations of the mountains to the coast (Potter et al. 1980), and absent from the barrier islands (Fussell and Lyons 1990).

Nests in a variety of wooded habitats, often near the edge of a clearing or a road. Can be found in deciduous and coniferous woodlands, wooded residential areas, and bottomlands (Nicholson 1997). May prefer dry oak-pine forests near the coast (Fussell 1994) and mature deciduous and mixed forests in the mountain region (Simpson 1992). Where habitat overlaps with that of the Scarlet Tanager, will use more open habitat than it would in the absence of the competitor (Nicholson 1997).

The nest is built from 10 to 35 feet from the ground (Ehrlich et al. 1988) on the horizontal fork of a tree, close to the trunk (Nicholson 1997). Forages by hawking and gleaning insects, and also by eating fruit (Ehrlich et al. 1988).

NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Stands of oaks, pines, and hickories in Southeast, in willows and cottonwoods at low elevations along streams and in canyons in Southwest. Also in parks. In migration and winter in various forest, woodland, and scrub habitats, and in scattered trees in clearings and pastures; in South America, more numerous in mountains than in lowlands (Hilty and Brown 1986, Ridgely and Tudor 1989).

BREEDING: Nests in trees, usually well out on horizontal lower branch, 3-11 m above ground (Harrison 1978).
