HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
The box turtle is found in most open forested habitats with lots of cover (Mitchell 1994, Wilson 1995). It can be found in many types of wooded areas, including hardwood forests, mixed oak-pine forests, pine flatwoods, maritime oak forests, hardwood swamps, and shrub plains, as well as in agricultural areas (Reay and Mitchell 1999). It may prefer mesic deciduous woodlands, with openings or edges bordering grassy meadows and with access to saturated bottomlands such as stream beds or low swampy areas. They seek pools of water, mud, or damp ground when summer temperatures get too high.

NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Forests, fields, forest-brush, and forest-field ecotones; also marshy meadows. In Arkansas, moves from fields in spring to forest in summer. Often enters shallow water in summer. When inactive, burrows into loose soil, debris, mud, old stump hole, or under leaf litter. In Maryland bottomland forest, hibernated in pits or depressions in forest floor (usually about 30 cm deep) usually within summer range; individuals tended to hibernate in same area in different years (Stickel 1989). Able to hibernate in sites that may experience subfreezing temperatures (J. Herpetol. 27:117-120).

Eggs are laid in sandy or loamy soil in open area. In Maryland, females extended home range from bottomlands to lay eggs in drier and warmer upland sites; moved several hundred meters from center of bottomland range; individuals used same nesting area in different years (Stickel 1989).
