HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
In Virginia, it may be found in more xeric conditions than the five-lined skink (Mitchell 1994). In Virginia, it is most commonly found in mature pine and mixed hardwood forests (mostly associated with live or turkey oak and loblolly or Virginia pine) (Mitchell 1994). In North Carolina, it is generally found in older wet or mesic deciduous or mixed forests where tree cavities and hollow snags are plentiful, and particularly in the coastal plain, associated with forested wet sites such as swamps and sluggish stream bottoms (Palmer and Braswell 1995). It can often be found in and around outbuildings and barns in wooded areas (Mitchell 1994, Palmer and Braswell 1995).

Semi-arboreal; often in sun on snags or stumps, or in rotting stumps and standing dead trees, occupying old woodpecker holes and other tree hollows (Palmer and Braswell 1995). Eggs are laid in cavities and hollows in tall rotting stumps and dead trees, under logs, rocks or other large ground cover, or saw dust piles (Mitchell 1994, Palmer and Braswell 1995).

NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Rangewide, occupies wooded areas and woodland edges having diverse soil types and moisture conditions; hammocks and cypress heads in Florida; also swamps, vacant debris-strewn lots, and barrier islands. Semiarboreal; often in sun on snags or stumps, or in rotting stumps and standing dead trees, occupying old woodpecker holes and other hollows. On coastal islands in South Carolina, preferred large live oaks having holes and a fringe of dense cover (bushes) (Cooper 1993); adults occurred most often in oaks or on the ground, juveniles occurred most often on walls, palmettos, or on the ground; may have actively avoided pines (Cooper and Vitt 1994). Eggs are laid in a nest in a rotting stump or dead tree or under rocks or other cover.
