HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Wide range of aquatic and wetland habitats; swamps, sloughs, bayheads, ponds and streams in pine flatwoods, offshore keys, marshes, river bottoms, tidal stream courses, along clear upland brooks; lowland floodplains in eastern Texas. Favors areas with much shoreline cover. May aggregate under waterbird rookeries. Hibernates on rocky wooded hillsides, in crayfish burrows, under rotting stumps or other cover, or in burrows of mammals (e.g., beavers) or tortoises.
