HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Everglades prairie, wet savannas, palmetto-pine flatwoods, swamps, hardwood-dominated floodplains, sandhills, mixed pine-hardwood forest, borders of cypress ponds, vicinity of lakes and marshes; most common in moist or wet lowlands. In Texas and Oklahoma, restricted to mesic grasslands (Ernst 1992). Mainly terrestrial; usually under surface cover (logs, stumps, thickets, etc.) or in animal burrow by day. Swims well; rarely climbs into vegetation.

NATURE SERVE STATE HABITAT COMMENTS:

Pine flatwoods, sandy, open woodlands with pines, wiregrass and scrub oaks; also pine-oak forests in the western portion of the range.
