The base layer we will use to identify vegetative communities will be satellite Thematic Mapper images such as this image of Whiteville and Lake Waccamaw. Unfortunately, the color of TM imagery alone does not tell us what alliance is present. However, with the additional layers of detailed soils and National Wetland Inventory maps, we are able to identify alliances with the use of aerial videography and some complex modeling.
